The brief

Three hundred square metres between a Victorian warehouse and an office block in Clerkenwell, and a brief that asked for a building.

The move

Give the ground away. The plot becomes an open piazza a few steps below the street, and the library hangs above it between two concrete blades so no column lands in the square. Inside, the floor curls up at its edges and light arrives only from above, through oculi in the stretched roof.
